Monkey D. Luffy, also known as "Straw Hat Luffy," is the main protagonist of the manga and anime series One Piece. As captain of the increasingly infamous and powerful Straw Hat Pirates, his dream is to find the legendary treasure, the One Piece, and become the King of the Pirates.

Appearance

Monkey D. Luffy is famously recognized by his trademark straw hat, which was gifted to him by Red-Haired Shanks. He is a slim, muscular young man with shaggy black hair, a slight widow's peak, and round black eyes.

Pre-Timeskip (Ages 7–17)

Luffy has a prominent two-stitch scar under his left eye, which he gave himself as a child to prove his toughness to Shanks. He wears a sleeveless red vest, rolled-up blue denim shorts, and grass sandals. He typically wore his straw hat with a yellow string attached to keep it around his neck during battles.

Post-Timeskip (Age 19)

Luffy develops a much more defined, broader physique. His most notable new feature is a large X-shaped burn scar in the center of his chest, inflicted by Fleet Admiral Akainu during the Battle of Marineford. He replaces his vest with an open, long-sleeved red cardigan that reveals his chest scar, tied with a yellow sash around his waist. He continues to wear his cuffed blue shorts and sandals.

Gear 2 and 3

His skin turns shiny and emits steam (Gear 2), or specific body parts inflate to massive proportions (Gear 3).

Gear 4

He expands his upper body, his muscles harden with black Armament Haki, and explosive steam clouds wrap around his shoulders.

Gear 5

Luffy's hair, eyebrows, and clothes turn completely pure white, his eyes glow red with ringed pupils, and a loop of white smoke floats playfully around his neck, reflecting his awakening as the "Sun God Nika."

Personality

Monkey D. Luffy is defined by his boundless desire for personal freedom, utter fearlessness, and a simple-minded, childlike nature. Rather than wanting to conquer or rule, he views being the King of the Pirates as simply being the freest person on the ocean. While he often lacks common sense and acts purely on instinct, he possesses a rare emotional intelligence that allows him to see directly into the hearts of others.

Luffy frequently filters out complex plans or academic explanations, calling things he doesn't understand a "mystery". He is entirely transparent, incapable of hiding his true thoughts, and operates with a pure heart that makes him immune to manipulation or judgment based on appearances. He possesses an insatiable appetite, most famously for meat, and approaches new adventures, strange creatures, and the world at large with awe and excitement.

He does not fear death, failure, or the formidable power of the World Government. When his mind is set on a goal, he pursues it with absolute confidence. Luffy does not consider himself a traditional "hero" and often claims to act out of pure selfishness. However, his deep hatred of oppression means that his quest for personal freedom naturally results in liberating islands and overthrowing tyrants. The one thing Luffy truly cannot tolerate is being alone, driving his deep-seated desire for genuine human connection.

Despite his lack of conventional tact, he draws people to him effortlessly. His infectious belief in dreams inspires his crew and allies alike. Background

Luffy has powerful and infamous relatives. He is the son of Monkey D. Dragon, the leader of the Revolutionary Army, and the grandson of Marine hero Monkey D. Garp. However, his background is less defined by his unconventional family and more by his formative years spent with his sworn brothers, Ace and Sabo, as well as the early influence of “Red-Haired” Shanks.

At age six, Luffy became inspired by "Red-Haired" Shanks and his pirate crew, who were anchored in Foosha Village. To prove his toughness, Luffy stabbed himself under his eye, giving him his famous scar. During this time, Luffy accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Fruit (now known as the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika) from a chest in Shanks' possession. This turned his body into rubber but stole his ability to swim.

After a mountain bandit took Luffy hostage and threw him into the sea, Shanks rescued him but lost his arm to a Sea King in the process. When Shanks left, he gave Luffy his precious straw hat, telling him to return it once he becomes a great pirate. Following this event, another mountain bandit, Curly Dadan, was forced by Garp to care for Luffy and Ace. While she was initially reluctant and gruff, she developed a deep, motherly love for the boys. Raised primarily in the wilderness of Mount Colubo, his upbringing was instrumental in shaping his powerful will and determination to become the Pirate King.

Luffy's powers come primarily from his and his mastery of Haki and his Devil Fruit, which was once known as the Gum-Gum Fruit but is now known as the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika. 

Devil Fruit

Monkey D. Luffy’s body possesses the properties of rubber, a supernatural trait granted after he accidentally ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi (Gum-Gum Fruit) as a child. While initially classified as a simple Paramecia-type fruit that grants elasticity, it was later revealed to be a Mythical Zoan-type fruit named the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika (Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika). The World Government actively hid its identity for centuries to suppress the legend of the "Sun God" Nika and the historical figure Joy Boy.

Gear Transformations

Luffy has developed several "gears" to enhance his Devil Fruit abilities.

• Base Form: Luffy gains permanent rubber properties, making him immune to blunt force blows, bullets, and lightning strikes. He can stretch his limbs at will to increase the range and momentum of his physical attacks.

• Gear 2: Luffy speeds up his blood flow by pumping blood through his rubber blood vessels. This drastically increases his speed and attack power, causing his sweat to evaporate into a distinct steam shroud.

• Gear 5 (Devil Fruit Awakening): This is the ultimate stage where Luffy fully transforms into the legendary "Warrior of Liberation," Sun God Nika. Luffy coats his rubber body with a glossy, black metallic layer. He heavily relies on this to sustain Gear 4 (Boundman, Snakeman, and Tankman), blending the elasticity of rubber with the hardness of armor. Formally trained in Wano, Advanced Armament (Emission / Ryuo) lets Luffy project a short-range burst of invisible energy outward from his hands to strike enemies from a distance. Using advance Conqueror's Haki, learned during his battle against Kaidou on Onigashima, Luffy can infuse his physical strikes with Conqueror's Haki. This allows him to damage opponents without making physical contact, unleashing devastating trails of black lightning that bypass external durability.

Goals and Reputation

Inspired by "Red-Haired" Shanks, Luffy seeks the legendary treasure left behind by Gol D. Roger. Unlike other pirates who seek wealth or power, Luffy explicitly states that the Pirate King is the person with the most freedom in the entire world.
